Green Trail Concept is a project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, that seeks to improve the governance of trail running events by incorporating environmentally, socially, economically, and ethically sustainable practices in the management of mountain running events.

🏃🏞 As we are coming into the pinnacle of the trail running season, Green Trail Concept wanted to highlight some positive initiatives towards a more sustainable trail running.

We know there are many trail running race organizers out there doing the right thing.

It is a continuous work that requires patience and innovation.

🌲 Åre Fjällmaraton: A marathon dedicated to trail restoration - An interview with Phil Gale – Responsible for trail restauration at Åre Fjällmaraton

“On average we lay or replace close to 3 - 5 kilometres of duckboards each year, knowing that even though our events are only a part of the total trail usage in the area, we are keeping the trail network in the best condition possible for all users, promoting tourism in our local area.”

🚂 Trail by Train Tour: Promoting train transport to & from the events - An interview with Jean-Paul Bruwier – Co-founder of Trail by Train Tour

“The TTT brings together trail-running events that are concerned with preserving the environment. What makes them special? Their starting points are all close to a train station.”

🌋 Volvic Volcanic Experience, VVX: Mixing sustainable tourism and trail running – “Day 1 = Run / Day 2 = Visit” - An interview with Jean-Michel Chopin – Founder of the VVX

“For the VVX we wanted to do things differently and offer something not only for the competitors but for the family and/or the people joining them. By the way we use the word “Experience” instead of just “trail” as the competition is just one element of the week-end.”

🌎 Happy International Earth Day! One of the biggest threats to our planet is plastic pollution. Did you know that over 430 million tons of plastic waste are generated annually worldwide, with less than 10% being recycled? That's a staggering amount, with devastating consequences for our environment. According to the OECD, 22% of the total amount of this litter either ends up in maritime environments or in natural areas. So what if we can manage the amount of litter ending up in our natural environments better?

🌱 The Green Trail Concept offers a pathway to reducing plastic pollution in the context of trail running events. By implementing KPIs and thoughtful planning, we can minimise our impact on biodiversity and manage waste more effectively. Whether you're part of an organisation, a group, or an individual who loves nature, you have the power to make a difference. Let's commit to a healthier planet every day, starting now. Together, we can preserve the beauty of our Earth for generations to come.

🏃‍♀️Join us on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of April at the Österlen Spring Trail race!

The Green Trail Concept team will be running a stand and several activities at the race to promote sustainability in trail running! Österlen Spring Trail’s founder and ADP CEO is a Green Trail Concept partner and collaborator, providing us with a real-life example of how we can make trail racing more sustainable.

🖊At the stand, you will be able to participate in a digital workshop and a raffle to win a shirt signed by the trail running legends @tinaemelie and @kilianjornet !

💚This event provides Green Trail Concept with the opportunity to gather information and collect data that will be useful in the course of the project. We are in the process of designing a certification scheme to improve trail running event sustainability, and your opinion matters! We will be happy to share more about our approach and how we aim to reach the project goals, but we also want to include your point of view as a participant in trail running race. Come meet us as the stand or on the trails, we look forward to engaging in fruitful discussions on sustainability!

Happy International Forest Day!🌳
When we lace up our shoes and hit the trails, we enter a world where nature’s beauty surrounds us in every stride. Trail running isn’t just about physical activity, it’s about immersing ourselves in the heart of forests, where biodiversity thrives and ecosystems flourish. These ecosystems play a fundamental role in preserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change. They provide us with a wide variety of resources essential for humans, but they are also crucial for CO2 capture, supporting biodiversity, and the landscape that defines communities also in the socioeconomically aspect. Regarding biodiversity, more than 20,000 species of trees have been included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN 2019), of which more than 8,000 are in critical or vulnerable condition. But it’s not only trees that we find in the forest. We also find plants, fungi, vertebrate species, and the vast array of forest invertebrate species. Amidst a climate crisis like the one we are experiencing, forest ecosystems serve as a significant carbon sink, where it is estimated that nearly 45% of the CO2 stock is stored in forests (MDPI/Forests). All these elements and many others define the importance of the forest and its richness. As our society’s relationship with forests evolves, so must our approach to enjoy them sustainably. That’s where the @greentrailconcept comes in. Our mission is to promote responsible trail running, ensuring that our love for the sport doesn’t come at the expense of our forests. This is therefore one of the objectives of the project, which we want to promote and support, ensuring that races held in natural spaces are carried out with the least possible impact. We should think about why we use the forest and how we do it. Often, many practitioners engage in improper practices due to a lack of knowledge of its best practices, so the first step should be to expand our knowledge and understanding.
Each of us has the power to make a difference. By deepening our understanding of forests we can become stewards of change, ensuring future generations can experience their magic💚 #internationalforestday #greentrailconcept
